What is Equine- Assisted Therapy?
Equine-assisted therapy is a structured, goal-oriented approach that uses interactions with horses to support physical, emotional, and cognitive healing. It’s more than just riding—it’s about creating a therapeutic connection between horse and human.
Under the guidance of trained professionals, participants engage in a variety of activities such as grooming, groundwork, or riding, all tailored to meet individual needs. These sessions can help improve: Emotional regulation and self-esteem, social and communication skills, motor coordination and balance, focus, patience, and problem-solving.
Horses are highly intuitive animals, and their gentle, nonjudgmental presence creates a safe space for growth and self-discovery. Whether someone is coping with trauma, anxiety, physical disabilities, or developmental disorders, equine-assisted therapy offers a powerful path toward healing and empowerment.
Types of Equine-Assisted Therapy
Therapeutic Riding: A recreational activity that teaches riding skills to individuals with physical, cognitive, or emotional challenges. It helps improve balance, coordination, and confidence. (Offered at Quarter Moon Acres)
Hippotherapy: A clinical therapy provided by licensed physical, occupational, or speech therapists who use the horse’s movement as part of an integrated treatment plan.
Equine-Assisted Learning (EAL): Focuses on life skills, personal development, and education through structured, horse-based activities—often in team or leadership settings.
Equine-Facilitated Psychotherapy (EFP): Involves licensed mental health professionals who incorporate horses into therapeutic sessions to explore emotional growth, trauma recovery, and mental wellness.
